Cloud computing is poised to change the nature of software piracy. With new software subscription-based licensing models, users can access software from anywhere in the world and, in many cases, using a variety of devices. Cloud-based software applications typically reside on the application providers’ servers, making it more difficult to copy. However, piracy still occurs through the unauthorized sharing of login credentials for paid services. In addition, cloud-based data hosting solutions may be used by software pirates as a means of distributing software programs and tools used to activate infringing copies of those programs.
