As at each of the previous gatherings, the community of Taizé will participate in this event by animating a place of prayer and welcome. In Malchin we had sat around a fire in the garden of the parish house. Then the time had already come to say goodbye; the buses had to leave Berlin and head in all directions beginning at 4pm. The music emphasizes simple phrases, usually lines from or other pieces of , repeated and sometimes also sung in. Over the next few years several other men would join the community. The same trust and the same faith, even if human and imperfect, that brought a simple fisherman from Galilee to Rome, the heart of the Roman Empire, to become a witness of the love of God giving his own life in the name of Christ. When the number of visitors to Taizé began to increase, and more and more young people started arriving, the brothers felt the need to find a way for everyone to join in the prayer and not simply be observers.

This question keeps on recurring, and the brothers have no answer. I was very enthusiastic about the volunteers who distributed the meals or stood in the railway and metro stations and were there to give directions in many places throughout the city. The meal is followed by a common prayer, and the afternoon is spent in workshops covering faith, art, politics and social topics. From the early morning on, they have been welcomed at the Messegelände exposition halls. Many young people came to take part in prayers in Puerto Rico, Haiti and Cuba with the journey ended with a youth meeting in the Dominican Republic. Their goal was to bring a breath of fresh air to the pilgrimage of trust that we lived in December 2010.
