Some of the internal spaces in Stella's design follow the exact proportions of the original state rooms of the palace. Opponents of the project included those who advocated the retention of the on the grounds that it was itself of historical significance; those who argued that the area should become a public park; and those who believed that a new building would be a of former architectural styles; would be an unwelcome symbol of Germany's imperial past; and would be unacceptably expensive for no definite economic benefit. The Association accumulated plans that had been believed lost, and funded a research project at the Technical University of Berlin to measure surviving photos and drawings of the Palace to create precise architectural plans. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is in the center of the Breitscheidplatz in Berlin. Photos of the original church can be found in the remaining west tower along with some of the original mosaics. The Pergamon Museum is the most visited art museum in Germany, and it boasts an incredible collection of antiquities and treasures.

In conjunction with Germany's defeat in , was forced to abdicate both as German Emperor and as King of Prussia. In all essentials, Schlüter's balanced, rhythmic composition of the façades was retained, but Göthe moved the main entrance to the new west wing. At the top of the Victory Column is an observation deck that allows for panoramic views over the city. The area is seen as symbolic reconnection of the two halves of Berlin, joining the residents of both sides in a completely new part of the city. In November 1918, the leader, , declared the from a balcony of the Stadtschloss, ending more than 400 years of royal occupation of the building. On completion in 2020 the building will house a modern museum containing collections of African and other non-European art, as well as two restaurants, a theatre, a film theatre and an auditorium.

The Oberbaumbrücke, or Oberbaum Bridge, spans the Spree River. The Ishtar Gate and Pergamon Altar are here. The Berlin Palace Becomes The Humboldt Forum. However, in July 1950 , the new General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, announced the demolition of the palace. In 1706, Schlüter was replaced by , who designed the western extension of the palace, doubling its size.

Often described as a memorial to freedom, it showcases paintings of artists from around the world. The 2,711 slabs are arranged in a wave-like pattern over 205,000 square feet. Built in the Baroque style, and boasting beautiful gardens and outdoor sculptures, the palace is now open to the public. On the latter occasion, when the air defence and fire-fighting systems of Berlin had been destroyed, the building was struck by incendiaries, lost its roof and was largely burnt out. An important driving force behind the reconstruction was businessman. After reunification, the Berlin city government ordered the removal of the asbestos, a process which was completed by 2003. The whole museum is named for the Pergamon Altar, which is one of its most valued attractions on display. Occupying the southwest corner of the Tiergarten, the Berlin Zoo houses around 14,000 animals. At the very top of the column is an angelic, winged figure that represents Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory. Four general areas could be distinguished: The representational area, storerooms, administration of commodities and the residential area. During the winter, Christmas markets are a major highlight at the square. The Berlin City Palace Sponsoring Association Förderverein Berliner Stadtschloß argued for complete external reconstruction of the City Palace, considering it the only option that would restore the aesthetic and historic ensemble at Berlin's heart. Although it could have been repaired, the palace was demolished in 1950 by the authorities, despite criticism.
